Trial Separation For You and Old Clothes

Are you having trouble parting with some pieces that may have been with you for longer than you’d like to admit, have been “loved to death” and should probably no longer be part of your wardrobe? You’re not alone! This has been my one big wardrobe downfall and a good part of the reason my drawers no longer close.

Step 1 – Trial Separation

I have found a great way to slowly wean yourself from these pieces in a way that will not cause so much anxiety, a trial separation! First thing you do is sort through your wardrobe and pull out pieces that are more than 2 years old, if you have LOTS of clothes maybe consider pulling pieces that you haven’t worn in 6+ months no matter how old or new the piece is. Then fold them nicely and shove them into garbage bags or rubbermaid storage boxes. Find a nice safe place for them and forget about them!

This will give you the opportunity to see that you actually don’t need them but know they are still available if you find yourself wishing you had held onto that one great piece. If you don’t find yourself thinking about any of these stored away pieces, move onto step 2!

Step 2 – Part Ways for Good

Now that you know you can live without these pieces it is time to say goodbye. You can opt to do your good deed for the month and donate them all to the Good Will or Salvation Army or you can have more fun with them. You might consider organizing a clothing swap with some of your friends and swap out pieces for something new.

You could even get some of your friends together and have a yard sale and make a little bit of money towards buying something new, it’s totally up to you! Some bloggers have even started a little store on their blogs and sell some of the nicer pieces they find themselves not wearing anymore.

How do you decide when it’s time to say goodbye to an old piece?

I actually practice this trial separation thing. It’s how I determine what to donate twice a year. First, the reason I donate twice a year is because, I have two children. So, before back to school shopping and summer clothes shopping, I go through their closets for things to donate. . . since they grow like weeds. For me, I ask myself questions when I look through. Have I wore it since the last donation. If it is an item that off season and I haven’t I usually give it more time. If after two donations I still haven;t worn it I give it away. Unless it is something I really treasure, is super expensive, or is a shoe – those things stay whether worn or not. Actually, I rarely give my shoes away.

lol I am the same way with my shoes, I should probably give a trial separation a shot with them as well. I have way more than I need but I like to have options!
